Joe Rogers sings the blues with a tune all the greats have known, overcoming the label of feeble-mindedness and overcoming life’s harsh turns.
For My Uncle Joe it was a diagnosis of developmental disability, at the time called mental retardation, leading to an institution for “the feeble-minded.” He was brought to the institution by the filmmaker’s family. Joe was left there to live his life without the chance to be in our “normal” world. Yet Joe returns to the community, to the place that previously appeared to reject him. And he commands respect by being heard and seen, amplified and magnified so that all might know the dignity and joy a free life allows.
