For more than 150 years Fernald State School for the Feeble-minded came to hold those seen as incapable of living in the “outside world.” They were called idiots, simpletons and fools and the formation of the “school” made to hold them became the best and the worst of society’s work. From commanding the attention of Charles Dickens for its successes, to the condemnation of the public and courts and the place where institutions were reformded and closed in the 1970’s Fernald State School stood and stands as the best and worst of our treatment of one another.
